Please note that we receive applications in excess of the placements we have. If you have not heard from us by September 23, 2011, you can assume that we were unable to offer you an interview

The process to be considered for a Volunteer placement is:

  1. Complete the Application Form, provide 2 References from people other than family members or friends and a 250 Word Description describing how you balance school work with extra curricular activities.
  2. Once you have completed your application, you can either put it in the mail or you may drop it off in our office. Please ensure you make a copy of your application for your own records. The address is at the top of the application. If our office is closed you may put your application in the box outside our office door.
  3. Selected applicants are called to arrange an interview. Please ensure the phone number that you provide is one in which we can easily contact you.
  4. Once accepted into the program, successful candidates must provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening through York Regional Police at a cost of $20. You must also attend a 2-hour orientation, complete a health screening exam and leave a $25 refundable deposit for a uniform, photo ID badge and parking pass.

We thank you for your interest. Please note that only those applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.

When do students volunteer and for how long?

The minimum commitment is one day a week, for 2-3 hours from October to June or July & August. Students volunteer at the same time each week - this provides consistency with staff, patients and visitors and allows the students to schedule their other activities around their volunteer placement.

What criteria are used to select students for interviews?

Successful students are able to demonstrate their flexibility in both their availability and desired placements. They must also demonstrate an understanding that the priority at York Central Hospital is to patient and family care.

What criteria are used to select students for volunteer positions at the interviews?

We are looking for students who are mature, committed, friendly and professional with good interpersonal skills. We also look for students who can act independently within the boundaries of their position as outlined in their volunteer placement.

Please Note: If you are seeking a Co-op program opportunity, please see your guidance department.
