Volunteer Service Areas
 

This list is a sample of the positions that may be available when you come for your interview. Some positions have age restrictions and some have specific time commitments. At your interview, we will determine if there is a position available that benefits both you and the hospital.

ADULT DAY PROGRAM:
You may work with small group or 1 to 1 activities with adults with acquired brain    injuries, Alzheimer’s, communication disorders or physical disabilities.
Located off site at Jean Vanier Secondary School

CARDIAC REHAB. PROGRAM – located at the Jacob Keffer Site
Cardiac Exercise Program Volunteer

CENTRE FOR CONTINUING CARE AND REHABILITATION
In the Centre for Continuing Care and Rehabilitation, you will be assisting our patients and staff in one of the following areas:

  • Resident Activities
  • Dining Room
  • Palliative Care

CLERICAL POSITIONS
The hospital utilizes volunteers in several different departments to assist with clerical duties such as filing, photocopying, faxing and phoning.

DIALYSIS

  • Dialysis Meet & Greet Patient Escort

Available at Main Campus, Vaughan Campus and Oak Ridges Campus

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING

  • Mammography Waiting Room Volunteer
  • Ultrasound Waiting Room Volunteer
  • CT Scan Waiting Room Volunteer          

DELIVERY POSITIONS
The hospital utilizes volunteers to assist them with the delivery of paperwork throughout the hospital.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE PROGRAM
The emergency department is a hectic place that requires a mature volunteer (post secondary students and adults only) to make at least a one year commitment. The role of the volunteer is to be liaison in the waiting room. There are a variety of hours available from early morning to late at night.

EXTENDICARE
Extendicare is located on the 1st, 4th and 5th floors of the CCCR Building. Although it is a separate nursing home, hospital volunteers are used to assist residents and staff with recreational programming.

GIFT SHOP
The White Rose Gift Shop is operated by the Volunteer Association of York Central Hospital and all proceeds are donated to the Hospital. Positions are available as a sales associate, buyer or knitter.

HELP (Hospital Elder Life Program)
The Hospital Elder Life Program is designed to offer special services to older adults while hospitalized.  HELP is a quality improvement program whose mission is to prevent older patients from a decline in both their physical and mental health during their hospital stay. A minimum of 12 classroom hours and 6month – 1 year commitment is required.
HEALTH INFORMATION SERVICES

  • Transcription Filing

INFORMATION DESK & ESCORTING
There are two information desks, one located in the Main Lobby and one in the CCCR Lobby. Escorts are dispatched throughout the hospital via the Main Lobby to deliver flowers, paper, specimens, blood work and escort patients and visitors.

MEDICINE PROGRAM

  • Intensive Care Liaison
  • Chemo Clinic Volunteer

PET THERAPY
All of our pet therapy volunteers are certified through the St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog Course. For more information on how to enroll you dog, please contact St. John’s Ambulance directly. After your graduation, we would love to have you volunteering at York Central Hospital.

PHARMACY

  • Pharmacy Escort

PHYSIOTHERAPY

  • Physiotherapy Volunteer Assistant – reserved for physio or kinesiology students.

SURGERY & AMBULATORY CARE PROGRAM
Volunteers are placed in clinic waiting rooms to work as liaison between the patients and the staff. Volunteers also work in surgical areas providing clerical support.

  • Out Patient Clinics
  • Post Anesthetic Care Liaison
  • Day Surgery Volunteer

THE VOLUNTEER ASSOCIATION
The Volunteer Association requires volunteers to assist with its committees and fundraising activities. Regular activities include Lottery and Gift Shop. The Volunteer Association frequently requires assistance with special fundraising events.

WOMAN AND CHILD PROGRAM

  • Post Partum Volunteer
  • Labour and Delivery Clerical Volunteer

YORK DURHAM APHASIA PROGRAM
You will assist with small group activities with adult patients only – 4 month commitment required, additional orientation time required by York Durham Aphasia. Located off site at Jean Vanier Secondary School
