Welcome to York Central Hospital’s Anaesthesia Department

The Department of Anaesthesia offers an extensive range of services to support the programs of York Central Hospital. To cope with an increasing workload that has risen as a result of rapid growth of the local population, the size of the department has expanded to sixteen anesthesiologists, of whom ten are working on a full-time basis at the hospital.

The anesthesiologists provide anaesthetic care to patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery in a variety of specialties, including general surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, gynaecological, opthalmology, orthopaedics, otoloaryngology, urology, plastic and cosmetic surgery and dentistry. We also offer anaesthetic care to obstetrical patients, including a 24-hour epidural service.

We recently extended the Out-of-OR Service to increase coverage of emergency situations and to provide enhanced service in Labour & Delivery, the Critical Care Unit, the surgical Pre-Admission Unit and the Consultation Clinic.

In a continuing effort to improve pain management, the Acute Pain Service was introduced to provide assistance in peri-operative pain control. We have also been successful in recruiting additional anesthesiologists with an interest in chronic pain management.

Over the next few years, we anticipate a dramatic increase in the demand for anaesthetic-related services, as the hospital continues its development projects to meet the growing needs of the community. The Department of Anaesthesia endeavors to provide the best patient care and to offer the most advanced services.
