What is Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR)?
HSMR is an overall quality indicator and measurement tool that compares a hospital’s mortality rate with the overall average rate. It has been used by many hospitals worldwide to assess and analyze mortality rates and to identify areas for improvement. The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) has calculated the HSMR for eligible acute care hospitals and regions in Canada, excluding Quebec.
What you should know about Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio
York Central hospital is committed to transparency. We want our community to know about our progress at any given time as we grow to meet the demands of York Region and beyond. The care our patients receive at York Central Hospital is top-notch. Every effort is made to ensure that our patients receive the highest-quality care possible.
We strongly support provincial public reporting because we believe it inspires improved performance, enhances patient safety, and strengthens the public’s confidence in our hospital. The public reporting of Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR) results is one more way for us to ensure your care gets even better over time.
HSMR gives our hospital administrators and healthcare providers a snapshot of York Central Hospital’s performance at a given time – areas where we are performing well and areas where it could improve. As such, HSMR results must be viewed in context with other indicators. The HSMR tool is not intended to serve as a measure for hospitals to compare themselves against other organizations, or for the public to use as a measure to choose where to seek care.
HSMR is intended to be used as a tool to help follow our progress over time, and make quality improvements based on the results. We, at York Central Hospital, recognize that there is always more to do to make the care we provide better, timelier and safer for our community.
